SAS Braathens, the Norwegian unit of Scandinavian airline SAS, was set to cancel an estimated one in ten flights today (27 January). The airline said that the cancellations were due to the fact that its pilots were calling in sick for a fifth day. Siv Meiningseth, a spokeswoman for SAS Braathens, said that the airline expected to cancel about 40 flights as pilots protested against plans for new labour contracts. The action was called by the airline's Danish pilots in protest over plans to employ them on a national basis rather than on company-wide contracts, Reuters reported. According to SAS, talks with Swedish and Danish pilots' unions will start next week with Norwegian pilots also represented.
