Brazilian Football Star and UNDP Spokesperson RONALDO Kicking Off the Campaign With a 30-Second Public Service Announcement; For Nine Million Refugee Kids, a Chance to LEARN and PLAY

LOS ANGELES, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 06/20/2006 --

WHO:

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is launching an innovative global campaign to provide greater access to education and sport for an estimated nine million refugee youth worldwide. Kicking off the campaign is a 30-second public service announcement featuring Brazilian football star and UNDP spokesperson Ronaldo. Called ninemillion.org, the campaign aims to create a global community dedicated to giving the world's refugee youth the chance to learn and play and to create a better, more stable and secure future for refugee youth.

WHAT:

Ninemillion.org is being launch by UNHCR with the support of founding campaign partners Nike, Inc. and Microsoft and Right To Play, an international humanitarian organization dedicated to using sport and play to foster the healthy, physical, social and emotional development of children in refugee camps worldwide. Nike supported UNHCR by developing the overall concept and content for ninemillion.org. T-Shirts featuring the ninemillion.org logo will be available for purchase at select Nike retail outlets worldwide, with net proceeds supporting the campaign. Nike also donated 40,000 balls specially designed for refugee camp conditions and for refugee kids. Microsoft is supporting the campaign through MSN, its online media network by hosting and localizing the Web site content in nine languages and providing 2.8 billion impressions of primary advertising media.

WHEN:

The ninemillion.org campaign and Web site will launch on World Refugee Day, June 20, 2006.

WHY:

Two-thirds of the money raised through ninemillion.org will be distributed by UNHCR to support education in refugee communities, including fundamental education and life-skills training; HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention; gender sensitivity training and peace education programs for war-torn communities; the remaining one-third will fund access to customized sport and play programs for refugee youth, implemented by Right To Play.

HOW:

Ninemillion.org is the primary way individuals can donate money to the campaign. To kick-off the fundraising effort, the Nike Foundation announced a matching grant for the first US $1 million donated to ninemillion.org. The Nike Foundation grant will help support education and sport for girls, who are often excluded.
