Award solidifies leading market position in metro vehicle supply
BERLIN -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 02, 2007 -- Bombardier Transportation and its joint venture partners in China announced an order for 192 MOVIA metro cars (32 six-car trains) from Shanghai Mass Transit Line 7 Development Co., a subsidiary of Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co. in Shanghai, People's Republic of China (PRC). The contract, valued at approximately 150 million euros ($ 204 million US), was awarded to Bombardier Transportation together with Changchun Bombardier Railway Vehicles Company Ltd. (CBRC) and Bombardier CPC Propulsion System Co. Ltd. (BCP). Bombardier's share of the contract amounts to some 51 million euros ($ 70 million US). Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2008 with completion in 2009. The trains will operate on Shanghai's Metro Line 7.
The new metro cars will be assembled in China at CBRC production facilities in Changchun. Propulsion equipment for the cars will be manufactured at BCP's production site in Changzhou and Bombardier production facilities in Vasteras, Sweden.
The contract represents Bombardier's ongoing commitment to support environmental sustainability in large cities worldwide. The order comes less than six months after Bombardier announced a 306- vehicle contract for Shanghai Metro's Line 9 and is another example where major urban centers are choosing Bombardier metros to reduce congestion and help their cities breathe.
Dr Jianwei Zhang, President and Chief Country Representative of Bombardier in China, said: "This order further secures Bombardier's position as the top provider of metro vehicles for both Shanghai and China. Bombardier has established itself as a strong partner in the Chinese market, delivering on its commitment to provide superior transit alternatives for urban centers where clean air, sustainable energy and improvement on a way of life are important priorities. We are pleased to secure ongoing business from a respected customer like Shanghai Shentong Metro Group."
Michael Buscher, acting President for Bombardier Transportation's Propulsion and Controls Division, stated: "This order also confirms the unique position of Bombardier MITRAC Propulsion and Control Systems on the Chinese market, where we offer a complete range of electrical equipment for applications from metro vehicles to locomotives and high-speed EMUs."
