Wall Street extended its rally Thursday as robust earnings at Exxon Mobil Corp. and Aetna Inc. helped ground investors as they tried to reconcile divergent economic data. Treasurys gained, while oil and the dollar slumped.

STOCKS: The Dow Jones industrials, lifted in part by component Exxon Mobil, had their fourth consecutive record high close. The generally upbeat earnings reports of the past two weeks have helped power the blue chips as well as the rest of the stock market. Thursday's batch of earnings also helped investors digest a pair of government reports that suggested an economic soft landing might be harder to achieve.

"Things on the horizon are becoming less and less visible," said Hugh Moore, a partner with portfolio manager Guerite Advisors.

He said the economic reports point to a "slow, grinding deceleration," but for the moment stock investors are trading on optimism. This contributed to Thursday's erratic trading - stocks spent most of the session in negative territory before a late-day rally.

Further direction about the economy will come from Friday's release of gross domestic product estimates for the third quarter.

Higher oil prices throughout most of the third quarter helped Exxon Mobil report a profit of $10.49 billion during the period, the second largest quarterly profit ever for a U.S. company.

Microsoft Corp. reported after the markets closed that its fiscal first-quarter profit surpassed Wall Street projections. However, the software maker's expectations for the second quarter fell flat. Shares rose 4 cents to close at $28.35, but fell 10 cents in after-hours electronic trading.

Red Hat Inc. shares plummeted 24 percent after rival Oracle Corp. said it will offer low-cost technical support for Red Hat's Linux software.

Shares of Sun Microsystems Inc. fell 0.7% after reporting in line fiscal first-quarter results.

FOREX: The dollar, which opens mixed in Europe, weakened Thursday as market sentiment remains negative after the Federal Reserve expressed less concern over inflation than many had expected in its policy statement Wednesday.

The market will now turn its attention to a third-quarter GDP report, which is expected to show that U.S. growth slowed to a 2.2% rate from 2.6% in the second quarter. Without a surprisingly strong number, the dollar is likely to remain weak.

BONDS: Treasurys rose Thursday after weak housing value data. New home sales unexpectedly rose by 5.3% in September to an annualized rate of 1,075,000. But this was coupled with a 9.7% drop in the prices of those homes - the largest annual drop since December 1970.

"The outstanding feature of this report is the 9.7% drop in median house prices, which is massive," said David Ader, Treasurys strategist at RBS Greenwich Capital.

"This is two months of price declines - it's a clear theme," he added.

Taking this along with Thursday's lackluster durable goods orders report for September, "you've got a very sound fundamental basis for the type of (market) move we've had," Ader said.

GDP figures will make the difference for Treasurys Friday.

OIL: Futures fell Thursday on a drop in natural gas and heating oil prices and a sell-off by some traders locking in gains made when crude hit a three-week high Wednesday. December light, sweet crude contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange fell $1.04, or 1.7%, to $60.36 a barrel.

ASIAN SUMMARY: Markets Mixed; ICBC Shares Soar After IPO

S.Korea Kospi 1365.69 loss 7.96 dn 0.6%
(All values as of 0450 GMT)
STOCKS: Asian stocks were mixed Friday, with Japan's Nikkei Average edging lower on weakness in blue-chip financial Mitsubishi UFJ, although gains in Honda Motor Corp. and electronics giant Sony Corp. helped to cushion broader losses.

In Australia, shares dropped on a profit warning from Boral and a warning that the drought will cut 0.7 percentage points from fiscal 2007 GDP. "There's been some profit-taking on materials," said Justin Gallagher, head of Sydney sales trading at ABN AMRO. "But it's not a bad thing to see a bid of consolidation."

Shares of Industrial & Commercial Bank of China soared Friday as China's largest lender launched its initial public offering - the world's biggest ever - in Hong Kong and Shanghai. It raised a record $21.9 billion (EUR17.4 billion), beating the previous record, an $18.4 billion IPO by Japanese mobile phone company NTT DoCoMo Inc. in 1998.

FOREX: Traders look for the dollar to hold in the range of Y118.20 to 118.80 ahead of U.S. GDP figures due at 1230 GMT.

BONDS: Prices of Japan's government bonds gained slightly, after the government reported that core consumer inflation rose 0.2% against 0.3% expected. "The CPI rules out a rate hike this year but isn't enough that we rule out a rate hike in the January to March period. So the impact of the CPI is limited to short-covering," a dealer explained.

METALS: Spot gold, now down $1.30 at $595.25, has to contend with currency movements, in addition to oil. The weaker dollar reflects a slumping U.S. housing market for now, but markets need more evidence that U.S. demand overall will weaken enough to curb inflation. In base metals, copper was little changed as attention turned to more promising prospects, such as for zinc.

OIL: Futures rose 24 cents to $60.60 on Friday, partially recovering from a sell-off by some traders who took profit made when crude surged earlier this week.

EUROPEAN OUTLOOK: Investors May Take Stocks Higher

Euro-USD 1.2702 gain 0.0008 up 0.06%
Stlg-USD 1.8910 gain 0.0002 up 0.01%
USD-Franc 1.2531 loss 0.0002 dn 0.01%
(All values as of 0450 GMT)
European stocks might start a few notches higher Friday, while government debt prices edge higher and the euro has slight gains against the dollar.

STOCKS: European shares may open higher as investors take some inspiration from Wall Street's continuing advances.

Spreadbettor Cantor Index is calling the FTSE up 13 at 6197, the DAX up 13 at 6297 and the CAC up 8 at 5441.

European shares ended lower on Thursday, with disappointing pipeline news from drug giants GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca and declines in the metals sector offsetting more positive earnings news from other companies, including Royal Dutch Shell and telecommunications provider France Telecom.

FOREX: The euro starts slightly higher against the dollar, and traders are targeting $1.2730, in a test of the market's resolve that the dollar should weaken on the Fed's slightly dovish turn.

BONDS: European government bond prices are seen heading for a slightly higher opening, after strong gains in Treasurys overnight.

Friday will bring the release of M3 money-supply growth for the euro zone, due at 0800 GMT, with economists looking for a modest easing to 8.0% both in the annual rate and in the three-month-average. Last month, M3 money supply was up 8.2% on the year and also for the three-month average. But the main focus will be on the release of the first estimate of third-quarter U.S. GDP growth for any hints about the strength of the U.S. economy. Analysts expect the quarterly measure to have risen 2.2% after last quarter's 2.6% increase.

"The Fed statement didn't help the market to find a clear direction, so maybe the figures for the third-quarter will...at least the session could be a bit more exciting," said Kornelius Purps, fixed-income strategist at UniCredit's markets and investment banking.

European Central Bank officials weighed in on inflation and imbalances.

Controlling inflation is the key to sustaining growth, ECB board member Guy Quaden said Thursday. ECB Executive Board member Juergen Stark on Thursday voiced optimism about a brightened perspective for an orderly unwinding of global imbalances.

In the U.K., the annual inflation rate will fall back to 2.0% by the end of 2007 if the Bank of England raises interest rates to 5.25% early next year, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research said Friday.

European government bond prices were higher Thursday after the U.S. Federal Reserve failed to deliver a hawkish statement following its decision to keep interest rates on hold at 5.25%.

Daytrana, a skin patch to treat hyperactivity, should report good progress since its launch earlier this year.
