Swedish industrial group Opcon AB said on Wednesday (1 November) that its electronic ignition systems subsidiary SEM AB will shed 60 jobs at its facility in Amal, Sweden.

The job cuts follow the company's decision to move the production of ignition systems for small engines from Amal to Opcon's plant in China, but are also part of planned measures to adjust costs to an expected decrease in volumes during the first half of 2007. The Amal facility temporarily increased its production during Saab's vehicle recall programme to change defective ignition modules.

"The cost adjustment we are now undertaking is fully in line with our previously announced forecasts. It gives us strengthened resources to increase focus on new products within the family of digital ignition systems we are now developing," said Rolf Hasselstrom, CEO of Opcon.

According to Hasselstrom the reorganisation will also enable the company to focus on the development of new products and systems within its new activity area Opcon Energy Systems.

Opcon, based in Stockholm, Sweden, manufactures ignition and engine control systems, electromechanical actuators, screw compressors and heat exchangers. The group has 440 employees nine companies. Opcon is listed on the Nordic Exchange in Stockholm.
