Swedish truck manufacturer Volvo Trucks, part of the Volvo Group, said on Friday (10 November) that it will reduce the workforce at its assembly plant in Dublin, Virginia, in the US.
The job cuts, which will affect some 1,000 of the plants 3,170 workforce, will be effected incrementally over the first quarter of 2007.
"The workforce reductions are the result of an expected industry-wide decline in demand for heavy-duty vehicles, driven primarily by many customers desire to delay purchasing trucks equipped with the new emissions technologies necessary to meet the US EPA emissions standards that go into effect on 1 January, 2007," Volvo Trucks said.
Volvo said in connection with its third quarter report in October that it expects "sharply lower" truck demand in North America during the first half of 2007 due to large pre-buys.
Volvo said in October that the decline could be as much as 40% during the first half of the year.
The New River Valley Plant in Dublin assembles vehicles for Volvo Trucks North America and Mack Trucks Inc.
Volvo group manufactures trucks, buses and construction equipment, marine and industrial engines and aerospace components. Volvo has some 82,000 employees in 25 countries. The company is listed on the Nordic Exchange in Stockholm.
