Finnish telecomms solutions provider Nokia said on Friday (9 June) that the Lithuanian mobile operator Omnitel had launched High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) services in the city of Palanga in Lithuania, from where the service rollout will extend to other parts of the country.

With Nokia's HSDPA solution Omnitel would reportedly be able to operate its network more cost-efficiently and offer its customers data services at speeds up to four times faster than current 3G speeds.

In addition to WCDMA 3G and HSDPA radio network, Nokia had delivered to Omnitel Lithuania packet core network equipment, and would upgrade the operator's existing Nokia Mobile Switching Center (MSCi) to Nokia MSC Server mobile softswitch.
